There is no general trade reason to own a 16mm hex key. It appears on large socket head cap screws in press frames and machine tool structures, on crusher, mill and quarry plant, on conveyor drive and take up assemblies, on large hydraulic cylinder end caps and manifolds, and on the mounting fixings of heavy equipment. If you need one, you know exactly which machine it is for.

At this size an honest word about what an L shaped key is and is not. The arm gives you leverage, and the leverage available from a key of this length against a fastener of this diameter is not really enough to break a genuinely seized fixing. What the key is very good at is getting into the recess, holding position, and running a fixing in or out once it is moving. For breaking loose and for final tightening on plant of this scale, a hex bit in a heavy socket on a substantial bar is the right tool, and where the manufacturer publishes a figure, a torque wrench is the only way to hit it.

That is not a reason to skip the key. It is a reason to see it as the access tool it is, and to buy it knowing what will finish the job.

There is a practical point about the keys themselves at this end of the range. Large single keys are not cheap and they do not live in a set, so they end up loose in a drawer where nobody remembers which is which. Sizes 16, 17, 18 and 19 look almost identical lying side by side. Marking each one with paint or a stamped figure takes a minute and saves the far more expensive mistake of trying the wrong one in a recess and rounding it.
