At one and a half millimetres a hex key is about the thickness of a paper clip. It goes into grub screws, and grub screws are everywhere once you start looking: holding a pulley or a collar onto a shaft, locking a knob or a handle in place, securing a gear on a spindle, clamping a cable end, fixing a small pointer or dial. None of those fixings is large, but every one of them stops a machine when it slips.

Being small does not make the work gentle. A grub screw is usually seated into a shaft that has been turning under load, often with thread lock on it and frequently with dirt packed into the socket on top. So the sequence at this size matters more than force. Clean the recess out first with a pick or a blast of air, because a millimetre of packed grease and grit stops the key bedding and you will be turning against three quarters of a socket without knowing it. Then push the key firmly home before you apply any twist at all.

The reason to be careful is arithmetic rather than opinion. A key this thin has very little metal in its cross section, and the hardening that keeps its corners sharp also means it will snap rather than bend when it has had enough. A snapped key inside a grub screw is a far worse afternoon than a slipping pulley, because there is now hardened steel jammed in a hole too small to drill.

The long pattern helps here more than people expect. Grub screws are often down a bore or between two other components, and the extra reach means you can get the key in straight instead of at an angle, which is the single biggest cause of chewed out small sockets.
