The ball is genuinely useful. Ground into a sphere, the tip will enter a socket head at an angle rather than square on, which means you can reach a screw that sits behind a pipe, under a bracket or at the back of a housing where a straight key would need the obstruction removed first. On a machine rebuild that saves real time.

What the ball costs you is contact. A straight hex tip beds against six flats down its whole length. A ball touches the recess only around its widest part, on a narrow band, and the smaller that contact patch the higher the pressure on it for any given effort at your hand. At 2 or 3mm the forces involved are small enough that it rarely matters. At 12mm they are not small at all. A 12mm socket head cap screw is holding something substantial and was tightened accordingly, and the arm on this key is long enough to let you put your weight behind it.

So the working rule at this size is not complicated. Crack the screw loose with a straight key, use the ball only to wind the screw in or out through the angle, and go back to a straight key for the final tightening. Used that way the ball is exactly the labour saver it is meant to be. Used to break a tight fixing at an angle, it is the fastest way to ruin a recess.

That matters more than it sounds, because a socket head has nothing on the outside to grab. A hex bolt that rounds off can still be gripped with a pipe wrench or cut with a chisel. A socket head cap screw with a rounded recess leaves you drilling it out or welding onto it, and on a machine that means downtime.

It is forged from chrome vanadium and then hardened and tempered, which for a ball end matters particularly at the ball itself, where the section is smallest and the load is concentrated.
