With an ordinary ring spanner, every turn means lifting the spanner off, repositioning it, and putting it back on — and in a confined space, where the handle can only swing a few degrees, that means dozens of repositions to wind a nut down. A ratchet ring stays on the fastener. You rock the handle back and forth and the nut keeps turning. On a job with any depth to it, that is the difference between minutes and a lot longer.

The specification that decides whether it works in a tight space is the tooth count, and 72 teeth is a genuinely fine mechanism. Tooth count sets the swing arc — how far the handle must move before the pawl catches the next tooth and the fastener actually turns. Seventy-two teeth gives five degrees. A coarse 24-tooth mechanism needs fifteen. Wedged between a manifold and a chassis rail with four degrees of movement available, a fine ratchet works and a coarse one simply clicks without advancing anything.

Eight millimetres is a small size, fitting M5 fasteners — cover and guard screws, brackets, clips, small clamps, sensor mountings and light assembly work. On small fasteners a ratchet is particularly welcome, because they are usually numerous and rarely tight.

The open jaw at the other end works as it always does: it slides on from the side for speed and access, and it grips only two faces so it is not the end for anything seized.
