Sump plugs are worth a mention because they show where a ratchet spanner is and is not the right tool. Draining oil means undoing one plug and doing it back up, and a ratchet ring is genuinely convenient for that — you can work it without repositioning while lying under a vehicle with oil arriving. But a sump plug threads into an aluminium sump and seals on a soft washer, and it needs to be tight enough to seal and no tighter. Over-tightened, the thread strips and repairing a sump thread is a far bigger job than the oil change was. So wind it down with the ratchet and stop; if the vehicle has a specified torque, use a torque wrench for the last part.

The 72-tooth mechanism gives a five degree swing arc against fifteen for a coarse ratchet, which is what allows it to work in the confined spaces where suspension and mounting fasteners live.

Fine teeth carry less load each, so the sequence that preserves the mechanism is: crack a seized fastener with a plain ring spanner or a socket, wind it with the ratchet, and torque it with a socket where a figure matters.
