At M8 a fastener stops being incidental and starts carrying load, and that changes how you should use a ratchet spanner. A ratchet is a winding tool. It is excellent for running a bolt down or out quickly, and it is not the tool for the first crack on something seized or the final tightening on something structural. Fine teeth are small teeth, and a 72-tooth mechanism carries less per tooth than a coarse one — so crack it loose with a plain ring spanner or a socket, wind it with the ratchet, and tighten it with a socket and torque wrench where a figure is specified.

Used that way the mechanism lasts for years. Used as a breaker bar it does not.

The 72-tooth head is what makes it useful in confined spaces. Tooth count sets the swing arc — the handle movement needed before the pawl engages the next tooth — and 72 teeth gives five degrees against fifteen for a coarse ratchet. Engine bay and chassis work rarely offers more than that.

The open jaw at the other end slides on from the side for speed and for fasteners a ring cannot go over.

Two habits. Seat the ring fully on the fastener before applying force — a ratchet ring sitting proud engages only the tips of the hex, and rounding a nut inside a ratchet ring is worse than doing it with a plain spanner because the ring is harder to get off afterwards.
