Double Ring Spanner (16x17)

The fifteen piece combination spanner set does not contain 16mm. It runs 15 then 17, and that missing size is one of the two gaps that catches workshops out, particularly anyone working on imported machinery where 16mm is a genuinely common head. A workshop that bought the set and considered itself equipped will meet it sooner or later.

This one spanner covers that gap and the size next to it at the same time. For somebody who already owns a combination set, it is an unusually efficient purchase: one tool, filling a known hole, and giving you a second 17 into the bargain, which is worth having because 17 is a size you often want two of at once when a bolt head needs holding while a nut turns.

Both ends being rings suits these sizes. By 16 and 17mm the fixings are carrying real load and are usually tightened accordingly, and a ring surrounding all six faces is the grip you want on anything that has been in place outdoors. An open jaw at this size, gripping only two faces, is working a good deal harder than it looks.

The spanner is forged chrome vanadium, hardened and tempered, with a satin matt chrome finish to keep corrosion off it. In a climate like ours that finish is doing real work rather than decorating the tool, particularly on spanners that live in a site box.
