Double Ring Spanner (14x15)

These double ended spanners are forged from chrome vanadium. The individual combination spanners listed alongside them are carbon steel. Both are hardened and tempered, both are normal materials for the job, and neither is a trick played on the buyer.

What chromium and vanadium actually buy is toughness for a given amount of steel. Chromium contributes hardness and helps the tool resist wear at the surfaces that do the gripping. Vanadium refines the grain structure of the steel, which in practice means the tool is better at absorbing a sudden overload without cracking. Where that matters most is in a tool that is asked to flex a little, or one that is slim in section for its length, because those are the places a sudden load concentrates.

A double ended spanner is a long slim forging with no thick centre section to carry stress, which is exactly the shape that benefits. So the material choice here is not marketing, it follows from the shape of the tool.

None of which makes a well made carbon steel spanner a poor tool. It says only that different patterns are specified differently for reasons that make sense once you look at them.
