Combination Spanner (7mm)

That is deliberate, and it is one of the quietly clever things about a spanner range. The maker sets the length of each spanner in proportion to the size of the fastener it fits, so that a normal pull from a normal hand produces roughly the turning force that thread was designed to take. A 7mm spanner is short because a 7mm nut cannot take much. Put a 7mm jaw on the end of a 300mm handle and you would strip the thread without feeling anything unusual. The tool is quietly protecting the fastener, and the customer, by not offering leverage that should not be there.

Which is why it is worth resisting the temptation to improve on it. A length of pipe over the handle of a small spanner is not more capability, it is a stripped thread with extra steps.

Seven millimetre nuts and bolt heads turn up on carburettor and fuel system fittings, on cable and battery clamps, on small brackets and clips, on motorcycle and three wheeler ancillaries, on appliance and electrical assemblies, and on light machinery. Small fixings, but ones that are frequently in places a socket cannot reach at all.

That is the other reason to own the size. A ratchet head needs room to swing and a socket needs depth to sit over the nut. A spanner needs neither. On a fuel line union or a clip half buried in a loom, the flat profile of a spanner gets in where a drive assembly simply will not go.

The spanner is forged carbon steel, hardened and tempered, with a satin matt chrome finish for corrosion protection.
