Combination Spanner (30mm)

There is a habit, common on heavy plant and among people who grew up around it, of hitting a spanner with a hammer to shock a large seized fastener loose. Do not do it with this one. Striking wrenches exist for exactly that purpose: they are short, thick, made without a long handle, and they have a squared off boss at the end designed to be struck with a heavy hammer. A combination spanner is none of those things. It is a long forged lever with a slim handle, hardened, and hardened steel struck hard does not bend obligingly. It can fracture, and a piece of a broken spanner leaving at speed beside a fastener you are leaning over is a serious injury.

The same applies to the other improvisation, which is a length of pipe over the handle. At 30mm the handle is already long and the force at the nut is already high. Doubling it does not double the fastener's strength, and something has to give.

If a 30mm fixing is genuinely seized, the answer is penetrating oil and patience first, heat where the assembly allows it, and then a socket on a proper breaker bar, where the force runs in line with the fastener and you have a stance behind it. Used as intended, on fasteners that are tight rather than seized, this is a straightforward and capable tool.
