Combination Spanner (27mm)

A combination spanner is a slim tool compared with a socket and ratchet, which is most of its advantage, but the ring end at 27mm is still a solid ring of steel with a meaningful outside diameter and a meaningful thickness. Plenty of large fixings sit in places that will not accept it: down a counterbore, between two castings, hard against a flange, or under a bracket that leaves clearance for the nut and nothing more. In those places the open jaw, which is thinner in section and approaches from the side, is the end that will actually go on.

It is worth looking before you commit, because the alternative is discovering the ring will not seat after you have already got yourself into position under a machine.

The general habit at this size is to think about the whole approach first: which end can reach, how much swing there is, where your hands will be, and what the spanner will hit when the fastener releases. Large fixings reward a minute of planning far more than small ones do.
