Combination Spanner (24mm)

It is a substantial piece of forged steel, long enough to deliver serious force and heavy enough that its own weight is part of how you handle it. Two hands on the handle for anything tight, and a thought spared for what happens when it comes off the nut, because a spanner this size dropping onto a foot, a windscreen, a radiator or a painted panel does real damage. On overhead work it is worth being genuinely careful, since nothing about a falling spanner is gentle.

The weight is also why it is worth being deliberate about engagement. Drop the ring fully down onto the nut so it is sitting on the full depth of the head rather than perched on the top few millimetres. At small sizes a partly engaged spanner usually just slips. At 24mm the forces are high enough that a partly engaged ring will take the corners off a head in one pull, and a rounded 24mm nut on a structure or a machine is a cutting job rather than an inconvenience.

The spanner is forged carbon steel, hardened and tempered, finished in satin matt chrome. Corrosion protection earns its keep at this size, because large spanners tend to live in site boxes and on vehicles rather than in a dry workshop drawer.
