Large fixings are frequently a bolt and nut with nothing captive, and at this size the forces needed are past what one hand on a spanner can comfortably supply. The arrangement that actually works in a workshop is a socket and a long bar on one end, doing the heavy turning, and a spanner on the other end, holding. That is the spanner's job here and it is a genuinely important one, because there is very often no room for a second socket and ratchet on the opposite side, and no way to brace one if there were.

Held rather than pulled, a spanner is in its element. The ring end goes on, the handle finds something solid to bear against, and it simply resists while the real work happens elsewhere. Many fitters keep an older or spare spanner in the common large sizes purely for this, since a holding spanner takes load in one direction and does not need to be the best tool in the box.

Worth knowing when you are deciding what to buy: a socket set and a spanner set are not alternatives at this size, they are two halves of the same job.
