Combination Spanner (21mm)

A double ended spanner gives you two sizes on one tool, either two open jaws or two rings. A combination spanner gives you one size, with a ring at one end and an open jaw at the other. On the face of it the double ender looks like better value, and for a light kit where weight and space matter it can be.

The reason most workshops end up on combination spanners is that the two ends of this tool do different jobs on the same fastener rather than the same job on two fasteners. When you are working on a nut, the question is almost never which size do I need next, because you already know. The question is whether you need the security of a ring or the side access of an open jaw, and with a combination spanner the answer to both is in your hand. Reaching for a second tool to change grip on the same nut, in the position you are usually in when it matters, is precisely what you do not want to do.

There is a practical consequence too. Because each combination spanner is a complete tool for one size, buying two of a size you use constantly gives you a matched pair for holding and turning. Two double ended spanners give you a much less convenient overlap.

Both patterns are worth owning. This is simply why the combination is the one workshops build their kit around.
