The important thing to understand is that leverage does not make a fastener stronger. The handle gets longer as the sizes go up, so the force arriving at the nut climbs steeply, while the nut itself is only as good as its six corners and whatever corrosion has done to them over the years. More leverage against a sound fastener is exactly what you want. More leverage against a corroded one simply destroys it faster and more thoroughly than a short spanner could have managed.

So when a 19mm fixing will not move, the useful question is not how to pull harder. It is whether the fastener is going to survive being pulled harder. Penetrating oil and time do more at this size than muscle, and a fastener that has begun to feel as though it is turning without loosening is one that is rounding rather than releasing. Stop at that point, because every further pull removes more of what you have left to grip.

Body position matters too. Set yourself so that when it does let go, and it will let go suddenly, you are moving into open space rather than into the machine.
