There is one rule that prevents most spanner injuries and most slipped fasteners, and it is simply this: pull, do not push. A spanner pulled towards you is under control. Your arm is braced, your weight is behind it, and if the nut suddenly gives you stop against your own body. A spanner pushed away from you is the opposite. All the force is in an extended arm, and when the fastener releases, or the jaw slips off, nothing stops your hand travelling. What it travels into is usually an engine, a bracket, a radiator fin or the edge of a chassis member, and hands lose skin and knuckles that way every day of the week.

Two habits go with it. Do not curl your fingers around the handle in a way that traps them against a nearby surface, and look at where your hand will end up before you pull rather than afterwards. And if the only possible approach is a push, push with an open palm rather than a gripped fist, so the hand slides instead of hitting.

None of this is dramatic and all of it is preventable. It is the kind of thing an experienced fitter does without thinking and nobody ever explains to an apprentice.
