Sixteen falls straight down the middle of it, and it is not a rare size at all: it appears on imported machinery and plant, on vehicle and motorcycle assemblies, on pumps, compressors and generators, on agricultural equipment and on structural and gate hardware. So this is the single most sensible spanner to buy alongside the set, and the reason these individual sizes are listed at all.

While you are here, something honest about the steel, because a customer comparing our range will notice it. These individual combination spanners are carbon steel, hardened and tempered. Some of the double ended spanners in the same category are chrome vanadium. Neither of those facts is a trick. Carbon steel that has been properly forged, hardened and tempered is the normal and entirely correct material for a spanner, and has been for a very long time; it is hard enough to hold its jaw faces and tough enough not to be brittle. Chrome vanadium buys additional toughness for a given weight of steel, which matters most where a tool is thin in section or highly stressed, and it is why you see it on tools that are asked to flex. On a solid forged spanner of ordinary proportions, both do the job. What actually decides whether a spanner lasts is the accuracy of the jaw and ring, the quality of the forging, and whether the user pulls or hammers on it.

We would rather say that plainly than let a customer assume one material is a downgrade.
