Combination Spanner (15mm)

Picture a nut running on a long stud or a length of threaded rod, with a good amount of thread standing proud above it. It is an ordinary arrangement: pump and motor mounting studs, exhaust manifold studs, tank and vessel flanges, threaded rod hangers carrying pipe and cable tray, U bolts, and any bolted assembly where the fixing was made long on purpose.

A socket cannot get onto it. A standard socket has a limited depth inside, so it drops over the nut, meets the projecting stud at the bottom, and stops before the walls have engaged the nut properly. You can feel it sitting high, and if you turn it anyway it grips on the top corners of the nut and rounds them. The usual answer is a deep socket, if you own one in that size and if there is room above for the extra length and a ratchet on top of that.

A ring spanner does not care. It is flat, it sits on the nut regardless of how much thread is sticking through, and it needs no clearance above at all. On a threaded rod hanger in a ceiling void, where there may be fifty millimetres of rod above the nut and a slab ten centimetres above that, it is the only thing that will turn the fastener.

Worth knowing before buying a socket set and assuming it covers everything, because this is the commonest place where it does not.
