Combination Spanner (14mm)

Look at the ring end side on. It does not sit in the same plane as the handle. It is cranked upward, usually by around fifteen degrees, so the ring stands proud of the shaft. That offset is there for your knuckles. A nut is very often tightened down onto a flat surface, and a ring lying in the same plane as its handle would put your fingers hard against that surface every time you pulled. The crank lifts the handle clear, so your hand has somewhere to be.

It does a second job as well. Because the ring is offset, turning the spanner over and putting it back on the nut presents the handle at a different height, which on a fastener recessed into a casting or close to an obstruction can be the difference between engaging it and not. Two positions from one tool, at no cost.

That is the sort of detail that separates a spanner designed by somebody who has used one from a spanner made to a drawing.
