Combination Spanner (13mm)

Thirteen millimetres is the size that turns up on more everyday fixings than any other in this range, across vehicles, machinery, brackets, frames, fittings and general construction hardware. It is the spanner that lives on the bench rather than in the drawer, and it is the one people notice missing within an hour.

Which makes it the size to own more than one of. On any bolt and nut assembly where the head is not captive, you need a tool on each end at once, and on 13mm that situation comes up constantly. Buying a second one is not extravagance, it is the difference between doing the job and looking for something to jam against the bolt head.

Since this is the spanner most likely to be used hard, it is also the one to check occasionally, and almost nobody does. A spanner wears. The open jaw spreads over years of use, slowly and invisibly, and a spread jaw is what starts rounding nuts that used to come off cleanly. The test takes ten seconds: put the open end onto a new, unworn 13mm nut and see whether it rocks. A good spanner sits with almost no play. If it wobbles noticeably, that spanner has begun costing you fasteners, and it is cheaper to replace than the nuts it will damage. The same check on the ring end will show whether the opening has opened up.

That is worth saying because most people replace a spanner when it breaks, and a spanner almost never breaks. It just quietly becomes worse at its job.
