Look into the ring and you will count twelve notches around a hexagonal opening. The nut still has six faces, so why twelve? Because it lets you re engage the spanner after only thirty degrees of turn instead of sixty. In open space that hardly matters. In a confined one it decides whether the job is possible, because the swing you actually have between a bracket and a wall might be forty degrees, and a six point ring would need sixty before it would drop back onto the nut.

There is a cost, and it is worth knowing rather than discovering. Twelve points bear on the nut over a smaller area than six would, and they sit closer to the corners. On a clean, sound fastener that is neither here nor there. On one that is corroded, already slightly rounded, or being asked for everything it has, the extra bite of a six point drive would be an advantage. So on a badly seized nut, the ring end of a combination spanner is not the strongest possible grip available in the world, only the strongest one on this tool. If a fastener is truly seized, treat it with penetrating oil and time before applying force, not with a harder pull.
