Combination Spanner (10mm)

A great many fixings are a bolt through two parts with a plain nut on the back. Nothing holds the bolt head. Turn the nut and the bolt turns with it, and you can stand there winding indefinitely. The answer is two spanners: one holding the bolt head still while the other turns the nut. A ratchet and socket cannot do this on its own, because you need a tool on each end simultaneously, and the second one has to be flat enough to sit in whatever space is left.

Which leads to advice no socket set will ever give you. For the sizes you use constantly, you want two spanners of that size, not one. Ten is the first size where that is really true. Exhaust and heat shield clamps, bracket and bumper fixings, cable trays and trunking, gate and railing bolts, water tank and machinery mountings, hose and pipe clamps: all of them are bolt and nut assemblies with nothing captive, and all of them stop dead if you only own one 10mm.

It is worth saying plainly because customers routinely buy a set and assume they are equipped, then discover on a Sunday that being equipped means owning a duplicate of the four or five sizes they use every day.

Ten millimetre heads are on more vehicle, machinery and building fixings than any other single size in this range, which is also why it is the size most often lost.

The spanner is forged carbon steel, hardened and tempered, with a satin matt chrome finish.
