The reason it is so popular is also the reason it needs using carefully. One tool covering a whole range of sizes is genuinely useful, but the movable jaw is held by a worm screw and there is unavoidable play in that mechanism. Under load the jaw flexes and opens slightly, and once it opens the grip moves onto the corners of the nut rather than its flats — which is how nuts get rounded. An adjustable is a convenience tool, not a substitute for a spanner on anything tight.

Two habits transform how well it works, and hardly anyone is taught either. Wind the jaw right down so it is snug on the flats before you pull — most rounding happens because the jaw was left a fraction loose. And pull in the direction of the movable jaw, so the load bears on the fixed jaw and the frame rather than on the adjusting mechanism. Turned the other way, you are loading the weakest part of the tool, and it is why an adjustable that feels solid one way feels vague the other.
