It is worth being straightforward about what an adjustable wrench is for, because it is the most misunderstood tool in a toolbox. Its virtue is that it fits any size within its range, so one tool covers what would otherwise be a set of spanners. Its weakness is built into the same feature: the movable jaw is held by a worm screw and it flexes under load, so it grips less securely than a fixed spanner and it will splay under high torque, putting the force onto the corners of the nut and rounding them.

That makes it the right tool for a nut that is not tight, in a size you do not have, on something you do not mind marking slightly. It is the wrong tool for a seized fastener, and using it as one is how nuts get rounded and how people conclude adjustable wrenches are poor tools when they are simply being asked to do a job they were never designed for.

There is one technique that improves them enormously. Always pull the handle in the direction of the movable jaw. The wrench is designed so that the load then bears mainly on the fixed jaw and the frame, rather than on the adjusting mechanism. Pull the other way and you are loading the weakest part of the tool.
