Adjustable Wrench (18")

It is worth being clear about where a wrench this size fits in the toolbox, because at eighteen inches an adjustable is competing with tools that do the job better. A socket and a bar grips all six faces and will not splay. A pipe wrench grips round work and self-tightens. An adjustable wrench does neither: it holds two flats through a jaw carried on a worm screw, and that jaw flexes under load.

What it does that neither of those can is fit almost any size, which on plant and pipework — where fittings come in a wide scatter of sizes and many are not standard hexagons — is genuinely valuable. Carrying one 18" adjustable instead of a rack of large spanners is a real saving for a maintenance fitter.

So use it for what it is good at. Wind the jaw fully down until it is snug on the flats and re-check after the first pull, since it settles. Always pull in the direction of the movable jaw so the load bears on the fixed jaw and the frame rather than through the adjusting mechanism. And when a fitting is genuinely seized, reach for penetrating oil, heat, a socket or a pipe wrench rather than leaning harder on this.

Never extend the handle with a pipe. Eighteen inches already produces more force than the jaw mechanism is designed to carry comfortably, and the failure is a splayed jaw and a rounded nut.
