The jaw opens wide enough for large unions, pump and valve fittings, machinery mounting nuts, and the sort of fastener that appears on industrial equipment rather than vehicles. The handle is long enough to shift them.

That combination is where an adjustable wrench needs the most care, and the reason is mechanical rather than a matter of quality. The movable jaw is carried on a worm screw and it flexes under load — that is inherent to the design, not a defect. At fifteen inches you can apply enough force to splay that jaw noticeably, and once it splays the grip transfers onto the corners of the nut. Large nuts are expensive to round and often hard to replace.

Three things keep it under control. Wind the jaw fully down onto the flats until it is genuinely snug, and re-check it after the first pull because it will settle. Always pull in the direction of the movable jaw, so the load goes into the fixed jaw and the frame rather than through the adjusting mechanism. And accept that a truly seized fitting needs a pipe wrench, a socket or heat rather than more force through an adjustable.

Never put a pipe over the handle. At this length the tool already generates more force than the jaw mechanism is comfortable with.
