Two things change together. The jaw opens wider, taking the larger nuts and fittings that an 8" tool cannot reach around — bigger plumbing unions, larger machinery nuts, and the fastener sizes that turn up on plant rather than appliances. And the handle is longer, so it applies more torque for the same effort.

That second point comes with a warning attached, because more leverage on an adjustable wrench is a mixed blessing. The movable jaw is held by a worm screw and flexes under load; give yourself more leverage and you can generate enough force to splay that jaw and round the nut, without ever feeling that you are pushing hard. On a fixed spanner more leverage is straightforwardly useful. On an adjustable it makes it easier to damage the fastener.

So the discipline matters more as the tool gets bigger. Wind the jaw right down onto the flats until it is genuinely snug — a fraction of slack is what starts the rounding. Pull in the direction of the movable jaw, so the load goes into the fixed jaw and the frame rather than into the adjusting mechanism. And if a fastener is seized, stop and find the right spanner or a socket, because at 10 inches you have enough leverage to make a bad situation permanent.
