The reason Torx spread so widely is that it does not eject the tool. Its driving faces sit almost perpendicular to the direction of turn, so there is no wedging action pushing the key out of the recess. A cross-head screw does exactly that by design, and a plain hex key has only six shallow flats to hold. Torx grips harder in a smaller head, survives repeated removal, and lets a manufacturer specify a genuinely tight fastener without designing in a large boss to take a large head.

The medium length is the general-purpose one, and worth understanding as a deliberate choice rather than the cheap option. An L-shaped key is two tools: put the short arm in the fastener and the long arm becomes a handle, giving real leverage; put the long arm in and the short arm becomes a quick-turning crank. A medium set balances those, with enough long arm for useful torque and a short arm that still reaches into a recess. Long and extra-long sets trade that balance for reach.

The steel is S2, and on a key it is the right specification for a specific reason. A hex or Torx key is a slender bar twisted hard, and its failure mode is snapping rather than wearing. S2 is a shock-resisting tool steel: it takes a high hardness so the points hold their form, while retaining the toughness to twist slightly rather than shear.
