It gives you two tools in one piece of steel. Insert the short arm into the fastener and the long arm becomes a handle — a long lever, so you get real torque for cracking a tight socket head loose or doing one up properly. Turn it round, insert the long arm, and the short arm becomes a crank you can spin quickly, winding a long bolt in or out far faster than the leverage position allows. Almost everyone uses one end out of habit; using both deliberately roughly halves the time on any job with depth to it.

The medium length balances those two uses. Long sets give more reach and more leverage but a clumsier crank; this is the everyday set.

The sizes run 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10mm, which covers socket head cap screws from instrument work up to machinery mountings.

The steel is S2 — a shock-resisting tool steel, and the correct choice here. A hex key is a slender bar twisted hard in a shallow recess, and it fails by snapping rather than wearing out. S2 takes a high hardness so the corners hold their shape while keeping the toughness to twist slightly instead of shearing. A key that has rounded its own corners is worse than useless, because it will round the fastener next.

Two habits. Push the key fully home before turning — a hex recess is shallow, so a key sitting proud bears on the top millimetre or two of the flats and rounds it. And clean the recess first: paint, corrosion and dried thread-lock collect in an upward-facing socket head and stop the key seating, which is the commonest reason a socket head rounds out.
