A ball-end key has a spherical form machined on the long arm, so it will enter a socket head at an angle rather than only straight on. In practice that means around twenty-five to thirty degrees off axis. That capability solves a specific and common problem: a socket head cap screw that you cannot get in front of, because a shaft, a casting, a bracket or a housing is in the way. A plain hex key will not enter at an angle at all; a ball end will, and it will turn the screw.

The limitation follows directly from the shape. A ball only contacts the recess over a small area near its equator, so it grips far less than a plain hex end which bears on the full flats. Under high torque that small contact area is what rounds a socket head — and once a socket head is rounded there is no larger size to fall back on and no external flats to grip.

So the working method is fixed and worth following exactly: use the plain hex end to crack the fastener loose and to do the final tightening, and use the ball end only for spinning the screw in and out in between. Ball-end keys have a short plain end for precisely this reason.

Sizes run 1.5 to 10mm, medium length. The steel is S2 — a shock-resisting tool steel, which matters more on a ball end than anywhere else, since the ball is the thinnest section of the key and carries the load on a small contact patch.
