Socket-headed and Torx fixings are usually recessed by design — sunk into a counterbore so the head sits flush or below the surface. That is one of the reasons manufacturers choose them. It also means the tool has to reach down a hole before it even touches the screw, and a medium-length key frequently runs out before it gets there. A long key reaches, and it does so while leaving enough arm outside for your hand.

There is a consequence of Torx at length worth flagging, and it is the opposite of what people expect from experience with cross-heads. A Torx recess does not cam out — the driving faces are almost perpendicular to the turn, so nothing pushes the key back out. That is the whole advantage of the drive, and it means a long key will keep applying torque until something gives, with no slip to warn you. On a small fastener in an aluminium housing, what gives is the thread. Where a cross-head would have jumped out and told you the screw was home, Torx will not.

So on smaller sizes, stop when it seats rather than when it feels tight.

Sizes are T10, T15, T20, T25, T27, T30, T40, T45 and T50. The steel is S2 — a shock-resisting tool steel that takes a high hardness so the six points hold their form while keeping the toughness to twist rather than shear, which matters more the longer and thinner the key gets.

Two habits. Seat the key fully before turning, because a Torx key part way in bears on the tips of its points.
