The reach is the point. Socket head cap screws are designed to be recessed, and on machinery, hydraulic assemblies and equipment housings they are frequently at the bottom of a long counterbore or behind a spacer. When a long key stops short, this is the only thing that gets there.

The trade is torsional stiffness. A hex key transmits torque by twisting, and twist is proportional to length — so an extra long key winds up noticeably before the fastener moves, and then releases suddenly when it does. Two consequences follow. You get much less feel, so you cannot judge how tight a screw is becoming. And on small sizes the key may simply fail: a 2mm key at extra long length has very little cross-section and a great deal of lever, and the combination snaps them.

A snapped key inside a socket head is worth avoiding above all else, because the key is hardened steel and cannot be drilled out — it usually means the component is scrapped or sent for spark erosion.

So use extra long keys for reach and access, and where a fastener is genuinely tight, find a way to get a shorter key or a hex bit and a driver onto it instead.

Sizes run 1.5 to 10mm. The steel is S2, a shock-resisting tool steel: high hardness so the corners hold their form, and the toughness to twist rather than shear cleanly — which on a long key is exactly the property that matters.
