Anyone who uses hex keys knows the routine: fan the set out, hold two or three against the fastener, find the one that fits, and start again next time. With nine sizes running 1.5 to 10mm — several of which are only half a millimetre apart — that guessing costs a surprising amount of time across a day, and it is worse in poor light or on a machine where you are working by feel. There is a second benefit that matters more in a busy workshop. Loose hex keys migrate, and an uncoated key on a bench looks like every other uncoated key. Coloured ones are findable, and a missing size is obvious in the holder rather than discovered halfway through a job.

These are extra long ball-end keys, so the ball on the long arm enters a socket head at roughly twenty-five to thirty degrees off axis for fasteners you cannot reach straight on, and the extra length reaches down deep counterbores. The method that keeps socket heads intact is to crack and finally tighten with the plain hex short end and use the ball end only for spinning in between — a ball contacts only a small area of the recess, and combining that with the leverage of an extra long arm is how socket heads get rounded.

The material is fully hardened chrome vanadium steel — chromium for hardness and wear resistance to hold the corners, vanadium for the toughness a long slender key needs.
