The reason is that the two features compound in the wrong direction. An extra long arm gives you the most leverage of any key here. A ball end gives you the smallest contact area of any key here, since it touches the recess only near its equator rather than across the full flats. Maximum available torque applied through minimum contact area is precisely the recipe for rounding a socket head — and a rounded socket head is among the worst fastener problems there is, because there is no larger size to step up to and no external flats to grip. What remains is an extractor, welding a nut on, or spark erosion.

The method is therefore not optional. Crack the fastener with the plain hex short end. Use the ball end only to spin the screw in or out once it is moving freely. Do the final tightening with the plain end. If a screw resists while the key is angled, stop — find a way to approach it straight, or use a hex bit and a driver.
