This one gives you 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 19, 21, 22, 24, 27, 30 and 32mm. That is a genuinely useful spread. It runs unbroken from 10 to 15, which is where most vehicle and machinery work actually happens, and then reaches all the way up to 32mm, which many fifteen piece sets do not.

What it leaves out matters just as much, and you should know before you buy rather than on a job. There is no 7 and no 9 at the bottom. In the middle, and this is the gap worth thinking hardest about, there is no 16 and no 18. Both are real working sizes here, particularly on imported machinery and on Japanese vehicles, and a set that jumps 15 to 17 and 17 to 19 will send you looking eventually. Above 22 the set steps in twos and threes and skips 23, 25, 26 and 28 entirely.

None of that makes it a poor set. It makes it a set built around the sizes used most, which is the correct way to build one. But it does mean the individual spanners we list alongside it are not an afterthought. They exist precisely to fill those holes, and the sensible purchase for most workshops is this set plus the two or three singles their own work keeps demanding.

The spanners are carbon steel, hardened and tempered, chrome plated with a matt finish. Chrome plating on a hand tool in this climate is not decoration. A bare steel spanner left in a damp toolbox through one monsoon comes out pitted, and pitting on a jaw face is what starts a spanner slipping.

A combination pattern gives you a ring and an open jaw in the same size on one tool, which is why a set of fifteen covers more ground than thirty single ended spanners would.
