The ring end encircles the fastener completely and bears on all six faces. That is what you want on anything tight, corroded or valuable, because spreading the load over six flats means the nut cannot deform and the spanner cannot slip off. The open end grips only two faces and will splay under high load — but it slides onto a fastener from the side, which the ring cannot do, and it comes on and off in an instant.

So the working method is: crack the fastener loose with the ring end, then flip the spanner and spin it off with the open end. Most people use whichever end is pointing the right way, and most rounded nuts come from using the open end on something that was still tight.
