Mitre Box With Back Saw Set (300x140x70mm, 65Mn+ABS)

The box has slots moulded through both walls at the angles you need, so the saw is held square and at the correct angle for the whole cut. You put the moulding in, hold it against the back of the box, drop the saw into the slots and cut. The result is repeatable — and repeatability is what matters with mitres, because two 45-degree cuts that are each a degree out leave a gap you cannot hide.

The saw has 11 teeth per inch. That is fine for a saw of this type and it is the right choice for what the box is used on: architrave, skirting, beading, picture frames, dado rail and glazing bead. Coarser teeth cut faster but break out the edge of a moulding as they exit, which on a mitre is exactly the visible corner you are trying to make clean. Finer teeth leave a face that needs no cleaning up before the joint closes.

The blade is heat-treated 65Mn manganese spring steel with teeth ground on two sides, and it is a back saw — stiffened along its top edge so it cannot flex. In a mitre box that stiffness is essential: a flexible blade would push against the walls of the slot and still wander.

ABS for the box is a sensible choice. It is light, it does not swell or split as a timber mitre box does in humidity, and it is cheap enough to replace when the slots eventually wear oversize, which is what finally kills every mitre box.

Two pieces of advice. Clamp or hold the workpiece firmly against the far wall of the box — a moulding that shifts mid-cut ruins the angle. And cut slightly proud of your mark, then trim: a mitre can always be taken back, never put back.

The buyers are second-fix carpenters and shopfitters running architrave and skirting, picture framers, glaziers cutting bead, and households doing their own trim work. Hardware shops sell it as a set because the two parts are useless apart.
